According to the Public Relations office of the IRIPP, the Agriculture Magazine program on the topic of "Fall Armyworm Pheromone" was broadcasted on Radio Eghtesad in the presence of Babak Heydari Alizadeh, the faculty member of the IRIPP.
Heidari Alizadeh said: "The fall Armyworm is from the Noctuidae family and is an important and dangerous pest in the western half of the world, which has also invaded Africa and Asia in the recent years. Unfortunately, this pest has been in the country for about two years and is causing great damage to the corn fields in the southern part of the country."
He added: Pheromones are being used in the world to control some pests, because excessive spraying creates resistance and reduces the effectiveness of pesticides. Pheromones are compounds produced by female insects to attract male insects for mating. By synthesizing artificial pheromones, this substance is placed in traps, and as a result, the male insects are attracted, and trapped, and mating does not occur. As a result, the eggs do not get fertilized and the pest population decreases.
The faculty member of the IRIPP continued: "There is foreign made pheromone for the Fall Armyworm, but unfortunately its molecules were not very effective in Iran. Researchers at the IRIPP succeeded in synthesizing the pheromone for this pest. The efficacy results of this pheromone showed very good results in Andimeshk fields."
